Many people do not prefer long dog gates as they make areas look more like
jailed enclosures than normal parts of the home.
However, there are a few cases where they become more of a necessity than a matter of choice and long pet gates are
needed in situations where you have to cut off access through a wide opening to an area where your pet could
potentially create a mess or be a hazard. For example, an open kitchen would require a long dog gate to restrict
access of your pet into the kitchen. Some of these gates come with the facility of a height extender, in case your
pet can jump over medium height gates.
However, the use of dog gates is not advisable in case your dog is a climber. For instance, some
of smaller dogs can climb over climb over the gate and in such a case, your investment in a
long dog gate would become futile.
Another situation where you may need to use a long dog gate is when you have small babies or small children in
the house. In this case, you have to keep away dogs from play areas of the children to avoid any problems.
With small babies a wooden or plastic dog gate is a better option than a metal gate as small children can
get hurt by potentially sharp metal surfaces on the metal gates. However, these gates may not serve
the purpose of containing a larger more aggressive dog as they can break or chew through it.
Once you have ascertained the need of a long dog gate and have decided upon your requirements, you should
look at the various models that are available on the market and check consumer ratings of the different
kinds of long pet gates. This way you can make certain that you get the best value for your
money and make the best choice from amongst the large variety of long dog gates available on
the market.
